Haus Alpenglühen

In the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena, every stay is an unforgettable, rejuvenating experience. The recipe for a summer holiday you’ll look back on fondly for years to come: a wide variety of walking trails, cycle routes and leisure activities, mountain lakes and swimming pools. 

Our Haus Alpenglühen is situated right in the heart of this area, in the authentic Austrian village of Ehrwald.
The Zugspitze itself, Germany’s highest mountain, lies in our back garden, and as the border with Austria runs along the summit, the mountain is just as much Austrian as it is German.
And it couldn’t be more convenient: you can set off on all sorts of activities straight from the front door – whether it’s a gentle stroll across the vast Moosvlakte or a climb up into the mountains (and, of course, you can also find activities closer to home or further afield).

Walking / Hiking

The Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena offers more than 150 stunning walks of all levels, offering a variety of experiences such as enjoying nature, a sense of freedom, reaching the summit - though it's not just about reaching the summit - and, of course, a physical challenge:

Trailrunning:
In the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena, each of the numerous running and walking routes has its own charm. Sometimes you’ll walk past crystal-clear mountain lakes and vast fields. Sometimes the path leads to a rustic hut. Those interested in history can also follow the route along the ancient Roman road, the Via Claudia, in this holiday region.

Digital interactive walks:
Six different walking routes using a smartphone, audio guides, videos, mini-games and puzzles.
Once all the tasks have been completed, a badge is uploaded to the digital collector’s passport. These badges can be shown at local tourist information offices, and each completed route is rewarded with a free children’s temporary tattoo.

Escape trails:
There are three different escape trails in Berwang / Rinnen:
1. The Bear’s Secret
- Duration: 2–3 hours
- Distance: 3 km
- Difficulty of puzzles: easy
- Terrain: mostly easy to navigate, not suitable for pushchairs
- Age: Families, children aged 7–12

2. The Secret of the High Alpine Spirit

3. The Berwang Mystery

Zugspitzi Water Discovery Trail at Gaisbach

NB. Please note: Regardless of the difficulty level of the chosen via ferrata, professional climbing equipment is compulsory. This includes a climbing harness, a helmet and a climbing set with fall arresters, as well as gloves and suitable footwear.

E bike / Mountain Bike / Gravel Bike

The Zugspitz Arena is hailed by many as a ‘paradise’ for mountain bikers. It is not without reason that it has been named the best mountain biking region in Tyrol on several occasions. You can be sure that you will find plenty of well-maintained and signposted mountain bike trails in the Zugspitz Arena. The cycle routes in the Ehrwalder Moos are ideal for those who prefer flatter terrain. The mountain tours are designed for experienced cyclists. Whatever your level, you’ll find the right cycle route for you here in the Zugspitz Arena.

Tobogganing

During the summer season, you can go summer tobogaganing in Biberwier.
- Length: 1.3 km, 40 bends and a tunnel (Tyrol’s longest summer toboggan run) - Elevation difference: 200 metres
- Start: Marienbergbahn middle station
- Finish: Marienbergbahn valley station
- Who: suitable for all ages; children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult

Weienßsee
This is a natural lake; there are no recreational facilities.

Loisachquellen
The source of the Loisach is situated in a picturesque location between Blindsee, Mittersee and Weißensee
The mountain stream connects the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena with its German neighbours in Grainau and Garmisch-Partenkirchen and flows all the way to the confluence with the Isar at Wolfrathausen (the entire route can be walked or cycled). It was formed around 4,000 years ago, when a rockslide above what is now Biberwier caused water to bubble up from the earth – a phenomenon that continues to this day.
Swimming is permitted, and a dip is even regarded as a Kneipp treatment: refreshing and invigorating, with a heavenly atmosphere.

NB. The 3 Lakes Walk circles the Blindsee, Mittersee and Weißensee, offering stunning views, and with a short detour, it 
        also takes in the Losach springs.

Bergmeren
Almsee
The Almsee lies at an altitude of 1,500 metres; there is a lovely circular walk starting from the Ehrwalder Alm, and swimming is permitted.

Sebensee
At an altitude of 1,675 metres, accessible via a walking or mountain-biking trail or a via ferrata, lies Lake Sebensee with its turquoise-blue waters and a breathtaking mountain panorama. Lake Sebensee is the most frequently photographed lake for calendars. Swimming is permitted.

Drachensee
At an altitude of 1,910 metres, the 28-metre-deep, crystal-clear Drachensee lies between the Seebensee and the Coburgerhütte.
The Drachensee is the highest mountain lake in the area and is very cold. Swimming is, however, permitted.

Igelsee
At an altitude of 1,585 metres, there is a small mountain lake in the middle of the meadow landscape. It can be reached from the Ehrwalder Alm, halfway along the route to the Sebensee. Depending on the weather conditions and the water level, the lake appears larger or smaller.

Dreiensee
The Dreiensee lies at an altitude of 1,843 metres in the Lechtal Alps, above the village of Namlos.

Gamsalmsee
The Gamsalmsee lies at an altitude of 1,278 metres. It is a small reservoir used for snow cannons, but in summer it is a popular swimming spot.

Eibsee
At an altitude of 1,000 metres, on the German side of the Zugspitze, lies the Eibsee, often described as Germany’s most beautiful lake.
Crystal-clear blue with stunning views of the Zugspitze and a wide range of leisure activities: walking, cycling, stand-up paddleboarding, pedal boating, swimming, etc.

In de Moos there is a golf course laid out on natural terrain, built in accordance with the very latest international regulations.

There is a flying school in Lermoos where you can take a paragliding course or go on a tandem jump.
If you’re more into model flying, you’ll find a model aeroplane landing site in the valley between Ehrwald and Lermoos.

Culture

Highline / Ehrenberg
Ehrenberg was once a powerful defensive fortress, an administrative headquarters and a customs post. 
Today, the four parts of the fortress are known as the “Ehrenberg Castle World”. 
Since 2014, the castle ruins of Ehrenberg have been connected to Fort Claudia on the other side of the B179 via a rope suspension bridge.
This spectacular suspension bridge, over 400 metres long – known as the Highline179 – spans the valley at a dizzying height. 
In addition to the castle ruins, there is an adventure museum and the DragonFly – Europe’s first zipline that is also accessible to wheelchair users. 

The Highline / Ehrenberg is open all year round (barring brief closures due to weather conditions) and, during the winter season, there is also Lumagica, a magical journey through the elements of fire, water, air, earth and music

Bergfeuer
As the absolute highlight of the region, the longest day and the shortest night – the solstice – are celebrated with spectacular fire displays in the mountains.
Every year, around the third Saturday in June, the Ehrwald-Lermoos-Biberwier valley is bathed in a very special light – weather permitting. 
Since 2010, the mountain fires of the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena have been included on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
This unique event on the Tyrolean side of the Zugspitze is a ‘must-see’.

Lermooser Teufllauf
At the end of November, a terrifying Krampus procession – complete with bells, fire, impressive masks, spectacular shows and sinister figures – winds its way through the village of Lermoos to the valley station of the Grubigsteinbahn. 
The Krampus, St Nicholas’s companion, is a beast-like devil from the folklore of the Alpine regions; the name is derived from the Old High German word ‘krampen’, which means ‘claw’. Krampus is often depicted as a horned, anthropomorphic figure who punishes naughty children, whilst St Nicholas rewards the good ones. 
They frighten children (and adults) with rusty bells and chains. The idea behind this is that the sounds drive away the evil spirits that are present around midwinter. 
The origins of Krampus date back to before the advent of Christianity and are found mainly in countries such as Austria, Germany and Italy.

Nikolausintocht in Ehrwald
On 5 December at 5.00 pm, St Nicholas will arrive with his helper Ruprecht, accompanied by the Angels and the usual Krampus figures.
Presents will be handed out to the children, and there will be all sorts of stalls for parents serving mulled wine, punch and so on.

Almabtrieb Lermoos
When the cows return to the village for the winter, they form an impressive procession through the streets, beautifully decorated.

Schafschoad Ehrwald
When the sheep come down from the hills and are shorn, a big celebration has traditionally taken place, with live music, snacks and drinks.

Bergfeuer

The beginning of summer (solstice) is celebrated every year with mountain fires.
Since 2010, the mountain fires of the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena have been included in UNESCO's Intangible World Heritage List.
Every year, mountain fires during the summer solstice (midsummer night) are the absolute highlight in the region and the longest day and shortest night are celebrated exuberantly with spectacular fire motifs. Around the 3rd Saturday in June, the Ketel Valley Ehrwald-Lermoos-Biberwier shines with a very special light. This unique event on the Tyrolean side of the Zugspitze is a "must see".
 

Hiken

More than 150 wonderful hikes at all levels. From light trails to more fanatical and adventurous hikes and challenging climbs and peaks.
The highest mountain, the Zugspitze beckons with its 2962 metres to climb to the top, or the Highline in Reutte. But several lakes in the area are also worth hiking, with the SeebenSee being the one most photographed for calendars worldwide.
 

Nordic-Walking

Nordic walking is a sport that evolved from cross-country skiing, also known as Nordic skiing.
The large open plain between Ehrwald, Lermoos and Biberwier is an invitation for Nordic walkers. There are also all kinds of link trails to neighbouring valleys. The Hochloipe Ehrwalder Alm invites to a fairytale round trip amidst a vast landscape at an altitude of 1,500 metres.

Mountain Bike

The Zugspitz Arena is hailed by many as the "Eldorado" for mountain bikers. It has already been named the best mountain bike region in Tyrol several times for good reason. You can rest assured that you will find plenty of, prepared and signposted mountain bike routes in the Zugspitz Arena.
The cycling routes in the Ehrwalder Moos are excellent for those who want to venture a bit more into the flatter terrain. The mountain tours are intended for trained cyclists. You will find the right cycle route for every target group in the Zugspitz Arena.
To the Ehrwalder Alm mountain bike area, it's only a few minutes from Alpenglühen.
At the bike rental in Ehrwald, you can rent different types of bikes (also with electric assistance).
It is also possible to take a tour under professional guidance.
 

Golf

Opposite Alpenglühen is the golf course, beautifully enclosed in a beautiful and peaceful environment between Ehrwald and Lermoos.
The natural soil-based golf course is built to the top current international regulations.
It is a 9-hole course, but there are plans to extend it to an 18-hole course.
An 18-hole course can be found in nearby Garmisch-Partenkirche or Arlberg.
 

Tobogganing

Those who head to the Zugspitz Arena in summer should definitely take a ride on one of Tyrol's longest summer toboggan runs (1.3 km).
Near hotel "MyTirol" in Biberwier, you can take the Marienbergbahn to the starting point.
The toboggan run is suitable for all ages.
 

Climbing

For those who love climbing, there are plenty of opportunities.
Mountaineers will find a variety of rock formations and climbing routes and via ferrata, in different levels of difficulty, in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena. Due to its southern location, many trails and routes are climbable in the early morning hours.
In the centre of Ehrwald is a real bolder/climbing hall. The climbing hall has state-of-the-art climbing equipment and in the accompanying shop where equipment can be rented or bought.
If you are more of a Tarzan, you can visit the high ropes course in Bichlbach, where you will find 5 courses with 60 exciting climbing elements.
 

Waterfunn

Cool off at or in one of the 8 crystal-clear mountain lakes.
The Heiterwangersee, among others, also offers water sports such as supping and canoeing.
Should the weather be less good for a day, Ehrwald has a modern indoor swimming pool with salt water and, of course, a slide.
For something more challenging, there are other options such as diving, canyoning and rafting.
 

In the air

Lermoos has a flight school where you can take a paragliding course or do a tandem jump.
If you are more into model flying, you will find a landing site for model planes in the valley between Ehrwald and Lermoos.
 

Z-ticket

In the period from 13-05-2023 to 05-11-2023 there is the possibility to buy a Z-ticket. This is an action card with many advantages and perks. The Z-ticket can be purchased for 3 to 13 consecutive days and anyone staying at least 7 nights in the region will get the benefit card at a special rate.
